Swaner Nature Preserve's Nature Festival June 2, 2007 (NOTE DATE CHANGE)

11:00a.m.-2:00 p.m.

ASWM will cooperate with the Swaner Nature Preserve in its Nature Festival. ASWM will maintain an exhibit. Speakers and participants at the ASWM workshop will also be encouraged to participate in the Nature Festival.

About the Swaner Nature Preserve: is a non-profit land trust, that was created in 1993 when the Swaner Family dedicated 190 acres to be preserved in perpetuity in memory of their husband and father Leland S. Swaner. After a decade of parcel by parcel land acquisition, the Preserve is now a virtual 1200 acre island of alpine wetlands and high altitude desert. As one of the few remaining high alpine wetland refuges of its kind, the Preserve is vital to the overall biodiversity of Utah and also plays an important role in the hydrological processes of the watershed, contributing to the overall water quality of our community. Swaner Nature Preserve is now emerging from an era of active land acquisition and embarking on several huge new endeavors. They are carrying out a comprehensive natural resource inventory and planning process, designing and building a LEED platinum certified Nature Education Center, and merging with another well-known local non-profit, the Norwegian Outdoor Exploration Center.

Mission of Swaner Nature Preserve's Nature Festival: The mission of the Nature Festival is to educate our community about environmental issues facing the East Canyon Creek watershed, as well as the natural history, flora, and fauna of the area. We intend to do this in a fun festival atmosphere that will appeal to all ages. Information will be presented through interactive displays, active tours, and informal classes.

This year they plan to have presentations and activities addressing:

  water quality and quantity
  geology
  raptors and birding
  local wildlife
  fish and fishing
  stream restoration
  waterwise
  plants and water conservation
  wetland functions and values
  native plants and wildflowers
  weed identification and contro
  much more!

Last Year's Festival: Nearly 40 participants included the Natural Resources Conservation Service, Utah Division of Water Quality, Utah Division of Drinking Water, Utah Division of Water Resources, Utah Division of Forestry, Fire, and State Lands, Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, Snyderville Basin Water Reclamation District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Utah Open Lands, Utah Wilderness Coalition, Utah State University Extension, Utah Rivers Council, Summit County Health Department, Trout Unlimited, Wasatch-Cache National Forest, Northern Arizona University, Utah Society for Environmental Education, Summit County Historical Society, local schools, and numerous local organizations focusing on wildlife, conservation, education and the environment. While enjoying live bluegrass music, interested attendees collected a wealth of information on local environmental issues of interest or concern including noxious weeds, wetland soils, native plants and ecology, mosquitoes, wetlands and their functions, animal tracking, forest health, and habitat restoration. Families gawked at Hogle Zoo's live kestrel, picked out native plants for xericscaping, participated in a wildlife photography workshop with photographer David Whitten, painted murals with artist Paul Jackubowski, and engaged in conversation with the attending organizations and agencies about environmental issues. They brought home goodies such as reusable water bottles, native wildflowers, "pioneer-style" family photos, and mugs of strawberry plants. This year's event will be a similar educational and fun event, as well as an opportunity for participants to communicate and network with each other.
