The classroom experience will be followed by a field verification trip to a nearby wetland. This workshop is hosted jointly by the Society of Wetland Scientists, American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, and the Federal Geographic Data Committee - Wetlands Remote Sensing Working Group. Space is limited so register early. Continuing education credits will be available for an additional cost.

In 1963 he returned to the University of Michigan with a joint appointment in the School of Natural Resources and the Infrared Physics Laboratory at Willow Run and taught while completing his doctoral program. In 1969 he was appointed Associate Professor of Natural Resources and taught Remote Sensing, Fire Ecology, and Multiple Use Forest Management during a teaching career that extended to 1999. He also served terms as Graduate Chairman and Dean of the School of Natural Resources. For six years he chaired the Biology Panel of the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Remote Sensing Programs in Earth Resource Surveys (CORSPERS) and directed the Image Interpreter Training Program for NASA's Large Area Crop Inventory Experiment (LACIE). He is currently a Director and Fellow of the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing.

  Wetlands and Wine
of the
Grand Traverse Region

Monday, August 28
1 - 5 PM

The trip is full. However, we are looking into making arrangements to transport additional participants and it is possible to register on standby.

Tour the wetlands of the Skegemog Wildlife Area with local experts who know the local ecology and vegetation. Hiking along the Skegemog swamp trail will be relatively easy - an established trail system includes an old railroad grade, boardwalks and observation platforms. But… this is August and this is Northern Michigan, so bug repellent and hiking shoes are recommended! Additional information on the Skegemog Wildlife Area is available at: http://www.dnr.state.mi.us/publications/pdfs/wildlife/viewingguide/nlp/47Skegmog/index.htm.

After the hike, enjoy wine tasting at the Chateau Grand Traverse Tasting Room in Williamsburg. The Chateau Grand Traverse is the oldest and largest European style commercial winery and vineyard operation in Northern Michigan. Cheese and fruit trays will be provided.

Cost: $35 per person, includes transportation

Limit: 24 people

  CANCELED

Sail on the Schooner Manitou

Monday, August 28
2-6 PM

(Actual time of sail: 3-5 PM, with time allowed for shuttle to dock.)

Experience the Great Lakes from the water - come for a sail of Grand Traverse Bay on the Tall Ship, Manitou. The non-profit inland Seas Education Association uses the Manitou and its schoolship, the Inland Seas, to introduce hundreds of children each year to the wonder and the science of the lakes. We will provide interpreters to talk about the ecology of the Bay, and about ISEA's program. Or, just relax at the rail with something from the cash bar. Rubber soled shoes strongly encouraged.

Reservations MUST be received by August 11; we reserve the right to cancel this trip if there is not sufficient interest, or in the case of inclement weather.

Cost: $50 per person includes shuttle to the dock, and a light snack on the boat.

Capacity: 62 passengers
