The Nature Conservancy seeks a Mad island Marsh Preserve Manager located in Collegeport, Texas. The Mad Island Marsh Preserve Manager is responsible for planning, directing and implementing a comprehensive stewardship program on the 7,063 acre Mad Island Marsh Preserve near Collegeport, TX. This includes management of wetlands and native coastal prairie, maintenance and management of preserve facilities and equipment; overseeing compatible farming and grazing operations with lessee’s to meet conservation strategies; planning and implementing habitat restoration, management, & enhancement; supervise preserve technician and volunteer work crews, seasonal staff and interns; coordinating visits and providing hospitality for visitors and overnight guests, and, cultivating partnerships with the local community, private landowners, public agencies, and industry partners. Writes burn plans and creates maps. Ability to secure and maintain Fire Fighter certification – The Nature Conservancy has adopted the Work Capacity Test (WCT) as the method for assessing fitness for fire qualification. The WCT for an arduous fitness level consists of completing a three-mile hike within 45 minutes while carrying a forty-five pound pack. Applications are sought for a postdoctoral research position to work with Dr. Sujay Kaushal at the University of Maryland and Dr. Paul DiGiacomo and Marilyn Murphy at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in the area of remote sensing and coastal water quality. The postdoctoral position will offer research opportunities in developing remote sensing applications to better detect the extent, timing, and frequency of contaminant plumes in coastal waters in response to land use and climate change. The immediate project involves linking remote sensing products of chlorophyll and total suspended solids in the Chesapeake Bay to validation data aimed at tracking sources across hydrologic variabilit. Rosica – Huffington Post – April 20, 2013 The state of Florida filed a lawsuit Saturday against oil company BP and cement contractor Halliburton over the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, becoming the fourth state to seek damages for the 2010 disaster. The suit, among other things, faults BP for not changing the batteries on the rig's blowout preventer. Halliburton was blamed for installing faulty cement barriers that were supposed to gird the well against oil pressure. For full story, click here.
