By Conservaton Technology Information Center – Partners – June 2012

After generations of fine-tuning crop health, farmers are dialing in a sharper focus on another key health issue in their fields – soil health. Not surprisingly, healthy soil is the foundation for healthy, productive crops. But despite its familiarity to any grower or scientist with dirt under his or her fingernails, soil hides many mysteries that contribute to its health – starting with the vast profusion of life in every cubic inch of healthy soil. The Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership and other leaders in the sportsman-conservation community commended the U.S. Senate for its vote giving final passage to the Farm Bill, the wide-ranging legislation that represents the largest federal investment in agricultural and private lands conservation in the nation. “Thanks to Senators Debbie Stabenow and Pat Roberts, who forged bipartisan agreement under trying budgetary circumstances, and to Majority Leader Senator Reid and Minority Leader McConnell advancing today’s vote, we are one step closer toward finalizing a new Farm Bill,” said Steve Kline, director of the TRCP Center for Agricultural and Private Lands. “The Senate Farm Bill invokes sportsmen’s values, helps sustain fish and wildlife habitat and makes the conservation title more user friendly and more efficient.” For full story, click here.

Senate prepares to vote for bill that brings big changes to farm policy
Thursday, 21 June 2012 00:00

The Washington Post – June 21, 2012

Briefly putting election-year politics aside, the Senate on Thursday moved toward strong approval of legislation assuring that farmers hit by bad times will be protected and that millions of others hurt by the bad economy won’t go hungry. The Senate is expected to show bipartisan support for the $500 billion bill that sets farm safety net and conservation policies and funds the food stamp program over the next five years. The vote will come after lawmakers finish the final eight of more than 70 amendments the Senate is considering as part of the 1,000-page bill. For full story, click here.

Senate reaches deal on farm bill
Wednesday, 20 June 2012 17:26

By Ed O'Keefe – The Washington Post – June 18, 2012

The Senate reached a deal late Monday that likely guarantees final passage of a new farm bill, likely to be one of the only significant spending bills passed by Congress before the November elections. The new five-year measure would cost $969 billion over the next decade and includes $23.6 billion in proposed cuts, making it a slimmed-down version of legislation that historically served as one of the main opportunities for members of Congress to deliver pork-barrel spending to their constituents. By Jean Caspers-Simmet – Agri News – June 21, 2012

Support for nutrition programs for the poor, help for beginning farmers and veterans who want to farm, tying crop insurance subsidies to conservation compliance and a strong commitment to conservation are among the provisions people want in the next farm bill.
