They filter our water, protect our land from raging seas and reduce the damage from storm water runoff, as well as house a wide variety of wildlife, but are often overlooked until it is almost too late to save them. Attention is being brought to America's wetlands by the Environmental Protection Agency, which has designated May as American Wetlands Month. The EPA is encouraging all residents of the United States to explore and learn about the value of their local wetlands, as well as take action to protect them, such as promoting buffers around wetlands and planting vegetation in their yards and limiting the use of fertilizers and peticides, which can damage wetlands.
