FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Windham, ME – The Board of Directors of the Association of State Wetland Managers (ASWM) is pleased to announce the appointment of Marla J. Stelk as the organization’s next Executive Director. ASWM is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit membership organization that was established in 1983 to promote and enhance protection and management of wetland resources, to promote application of sound science to wetland management efforts and to provide training and education for our members and the public. ASWM's members and partners include states and tribes, federal agencies, nonprofit partners, wetland professionals, educators, and wetland enthusiasts.

“We’re exceptionally pleased that Marla has taken on this leadership role,” said Ken Murin, Chair of ASWM’s Board of Directors. “Her broad knowledge of wetland issues coupled with years of experience working on fundraising, communications and membership development make her well positioned to lead us going forward.” Collis Adams, Co-Chair of ASWM’s Executive Director Search Committee also shares that “Marla’s passion and commitment for environmental science coupled with her deep knowledge of our work will enable her to plan effectively for the future, continue to support and expand our programs, and introduce innovative approaches to wetland program capacity building.”

ASWM’s Board of Directors conducted a rigorous international search, resulting in the selection of Ms. Stelk based on her many skills and demonstrated capacity to continue to build the organization. Marla Stelk started her relationship with ASWM five years ago as a policy analyst. During her tenure at ASWM, she has led several major grant-funded projects for ASWM, developed national workgroups, authored multiple reports, written numerous successful grant applications and has been leading ASWM’s communications and membership development activities. She has developed, coordinated and moderated various webinar series, including the Wetland Mapping Consortium and the Natural Floodplain Functions Alliance. She has established strong relationships with ASWM’s many existing partners and developed relationships for ASWM with many new partners. ASWM is excited to continue to build on her momentum at ASWM to increase the capacity of wetland programs and collaborative partnerships.

Stelk has over 20 years of experience in environmental work, research and organizational leadership. She brings superb communication skills and a deep passion for science and environmental policy. In 2015, Marla was elected as a town councilor for the Town of Gorham, Maine and has been an Executive Committee Member of the Greater Portland Council of Governments since 2016. She is also an active volunteer for the Gorham Village Alliance.

Marla holds a BA with honors in Environmental Issues from Colorado College and a MA in Community Planning and Development from Muskie School of Public Service, University of Southern Maine, where she focused on land use and the environment.

Effective immediately, Marla will become Assistant Director for ASWM.
