The Compleat Wetlander: A Better Wetland Website: Information Please

Information is a source of learning. But unless it is organized,
processed, and available to the right people in a format for
decision making, it is a burden, not a benefit.”
–William Pollard

The Association of State Wetland Managers’ website is in desperate need of a facelift.  We’ve known it for some time.  We have ideas, lots of ideas.  But the website exists for the people who use it and to be successful, it must be customer friendly.  The purpose of our website is to help people learn about wetlands.  It’s only as good as it is useful to the people who visit.

The ASWM website contains information about wetland policies, programs and educational resources. Materials cover a range of issues about wetland science, legal matters, wetland-related news, and specialized topics such as climate change, local planning and Clean Water Act jurisdiction.

The website’s content reflects the topics and trends that we believe shape wetland policy and provide the framework for wetland management, conservation and protection.

So who visits our site?  What’s useful?  What’s not? What do people really want to know?

Unless someone drops us an e-mail or gives us a call, we haven’t a clue.  Over the years ASWM has received many compliments about the content of the site from people who find it useful.  There are 5,000 other websites that link to ours.  But we need something more tangible from website users to direct the redesign of the site.

We want to know what people come to this site to find so we can reorganize, revise and add information they are looking for.

You can help.

Please fill out the one-page feedback form at http://www.aswm.org/website_feedback_form.html.

The information provided by you and others will help guide changes to the website.  Our goal is to make the most important information easier to find, to add new content that respondents identify as important, to keep what they like and to remove what’s not needed.

In addition to the feedback form we have added Google Analytics to the site recently so we can track the pages visited most frequently.  Google Analytics aggregates information from multiple users.  The only individuals who will be identifiable to us are those who provide their e-mail address at the end of the form so we can follow up with additional questions about their comments for the website redesign.

The plan going forward is to analyze the data we receive from this feedback form and Google Analytics, inventory the site for content, and redesign it so that it’s easy to find what people are most likely to look for.  When we change to the new website design, we’ll still keep the old one around for a couple of months so that frequent visitors may quickly find information where it used to be while they are becoming accustomed to the new layout.  If we stay on schedule, the revised website should be available around the beginning of the 2011.
