Views from the bog-o-sphere A Sad State of Affairs – Why the professional field of stream restoration still has a long road ahead of it.

By Kevin Atkins – December 17, 2012
I have to confess; when I got this month’s edition of Erosion Control I was excited to find that the cover story was to address various options for stream bank stabilization. However, I must admit that I was just as quickly disappointed to find that article lauded the installation of gabion mattresses & baskets as the economical alternative to rip-rap slopes. First off, let me sure to state that I do not mean this as an attack on the individuals installing or designing this solution. If the sole purpose for engineering this solution was to provide a stabilized, hard-armored stream bank with a design lifecycle in the range of 10-25 years then the gabions should more than suffice to meet that very narrow design criteria.  http://www.atkins-ecosci.us/in-the-news/asadstateofaffairs
