Theater review: ‘Back Bog Beast Bait’ intrigues but is troublingly enigmatic

Sam Shepard might be one of America’s most celebrated contemporary playwrights, but his early play “Back Bog Beast Bait” is not well known. The final work of his early East Village period and the last play he wrote before taking off for London in 1971 for three years, this bluesy surreal cowboy-Western, monster-horror tale set in bayou swamp country is a tricky piece that bears the stamp of the 1960s’ experimental theater scene.
